The Museum of Discovery and Science’s Leonardo da Vinci Society presents: Sky’s the Limit, featuring world traveling, award winning, pilot Captain Barrington Irving on Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.  in the Keller Science Theater at Museum of Discovery and Science.  Guests will enjoy cocktails, soft drinks and hors doeuvres plus they will experience the brand new To Fly exhibit, featuring the new 7D multi-sensory capsule dome.

Leonardo da Vinci Society members and other guests will be treated to a special presentation by renowned pilot, Captain Barrington Irving, who in 2007, became the youngest person, at 23, and first black pilot to fly solo around the globe. On his 97-day journey, he flew 30,000 miles in a single-engine plane called “Inspiration.”  He made the trip to show other youth that if he could achieve his dream, they could too. Last fall, with his current project, The Flying Classroom, Captain Irving carried out 16 STEM-based sea, air, and land expeditions in 11 countries while students in grades K-8 across the U.S. followed his adventures as part of their science curriculums.

“I created the Flying Classroom to inspire and engage students by making STEM+ relevant to their lives,” said Captain Irving. I wanted to ignite their imaginations and challenge them to find solutions to real-life problems through the subjects they study in school. I also wanted to show them, by example, that with determination and hard work, they too can achieve their dreams.”

Visitors of all ages will also have a blast exploring the interactive displays in the Museum of Discovery and Science’s refreshed aviation station, To Fly, made possible by a generous gift from the Emil Buehler Perpetual Trust. By discovering the different areas within the exhibit, attendees will learn about controlled flight, fundamentals of flight, navigation, and the materials used to build planes.

Guests will also experience the magic of flight by stepping inside the brand new 7D-multi-sensory theater capsule. The simulator uses moving seats, high definition 3D film and other special effects to allow visitors to “fly” in a variety of aircraft.

Sky’s The Limit will also show case The Art of Aircraft, featuring the artwork of Frank Martin presented by Steven Greenwald Design, Inc. Frank Martin’s award-winning, multi-layered abstract paintings incorporate collage, painting and graphics tell stories of aviation captured with fresh color and vivid imagination.
